SNRIU held a meeting of the Working Group (SIRG) on the Application of IAEA Safeguards in Ukraine

On 19 June 2024, the SNRIU hosted a meeting of the IAEA Safeguards Implementation Review Group (SIRG) in Ukraine.

The IAEA delegation at the meeting was represented by a group of inspectors of the Agency's Division of Operations C, Department of Safeguards, headed by Director of the Division Mosatiwa Rasweswe.

Ukraine was represented in the Working Group by experts from the SNRIU Nuclear Safety and Safeguards Directorate, the Ministry of Energy, SE «NNEGC «Energoatom», SSE Chornobyl NPP, SS “Atomremontservice”, NSC KIPT, headed by Oleh Korikov, Head of SNRIU - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine.

“Even in the conditions of russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, thanks to the professionalism and daily hard work of Ukrainian experts and IAEA inspectors, we manage to continue applying safeguards to nuclear materials, including the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP, as provided for in the Safeguards Agreement between Ukraine and the IAEA. For the Ukrainian nuclear regulator, ensuring compliance with international obligations in the field of nuclear non-proliferation safeguards is one of the priority tasks in its activities”, SNRIU Chairman Oleh Korikov said in his welcoming speech.

Mosatiwa Rasweswe, Head of the IAEA Delegation of the Working Group, said that Ukraine received a positive IAEA safeguards review for 2023. This means that last year our state fulfilled the requirements of the Agreement on Safeguards in connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Additional Protocol to this Agreement.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state of implementation of the Agreement between Ukraine and the IAEA on the Application of Safeguards in Connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Additional Protocol to this Agreement, the impact of war and hostilities on IAEA inspections at nuclear facilities and enterprises, and a number of other issues.

Following the meeting, the working group will develop measures to ensure effective application of safeguards in Ukraine and determine the timing of their implementation.
