At its meeting on 20 June 2024, the Board of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine approved the final version of the Eighth National Report on the fulfilment by Ukraine of its obligations under the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management (hereinafter referred to as the Joint Convention).

“Ukraine continues to consistently fulfil its obligations under the Joint Convention and actively supports the activities taking place within the framework of the process of dissemination of the Joint Convention principles. The main "challenge" for Ukraine to fulfil its obligations under the Joint Convention in connection with the full-scale invasion of russia remains overcoming the consequences of the impact of military actions on facilities intended for spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management”, said Natalia Rybalka, Director of the SNRIU Department on Safety of Radiation Technologies and Radioactive Waste Management, presenting the draft National Report.

The main objectives of the Report are to provide objective information to the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention and the public of Ukraine on the safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste management, measures to ensure protection of personnel, the public and the environment from harmful effects of ionising radiation.

The document summarises the results of cooperation between the state regulatory authority and nuclear energy stakeholders to maintain the achieved safety level in the face of unprecedented challenges due to the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by the russian federation.

The Eighth National Report was prepared by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine in cooperation with the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, operating organisations, enterprises, as well as scientific institutes and leading experts, in accordance with the requirements of the Joint Convention, as well as taking into account the Final Report of the Seventh Meeting of the Contracting Parties.

After reviewing the information presented and taking into account the discussion during the meeting, the SNRIU Board decided to approve the draft version of the eighth National Report of Ukraine on the fulfilment of obligations under the Joint Convention and take it as a basis for preparing the English official version of the Report for posting on the IAEA secure website on the Joint Convention.

The process of reviewing the National Reports of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention will begin on 16 August 2024 with the posting of the National Reports of the Parties and will end with the next Eighth Meeting of the Contracting Parties for the Presentation and Review of National Reports, which is scheduled to be held in March 2025 at the IAEA Office.
