During the working visit to the South Ukrainian NPP, Head of SNRIU - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh Korikov met with IAEA experts who are currently carrying out tasks at the NPP site as part of the permanent monitoring mission at the invitation of the Government of Ukraine.
During the meeting, which took place on 14 June 2024, the parties discussed the results of the planned joint plant-wide emergency training exercise held on 12-13 June 2024, in which IAEA experts were involved as observers. The Agency's representatives, as part of the permanent monitoring mission at SUNPP, noted the high level of emergency preparedness and response and assessed the professionalism of the relevant units and specialists who participated in the training.
“I am grateful that in this difficult time, you continue to work in Ukraine, providing consultations, recording all the effects of the war that pose a threat to peaceful nuclear facilities. But today it is important for us not only to protect nuclear power plants but also to protect the country's energy infrastructure in general from russian attacks, as nuclear power plants are its integral and key component. Damage to power transmission lines, substations, switchgear, etc. may affect nuclear and radiation safety at NPP industrial sites, create new threats and challenges for their safe operation. Together with the IAEA management, we have repeatedly considered the issue of expanding the functions of the Agency's permanent monitoring missions operating in Ukraine and improving their efficiency. I hope that these intentions will soon be implemented in practice”, said Oleh Korikov.
