On August 22, 2024, the Head of the SNRIU - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety Oleh Korikov held a working meeting with a representative of the assistance program from the US Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), Mr. Daniel Blumenthal, as part of his visit to Ukraine on the discussion of urgent issues of cooperation, assistance, and support to enhance the ability to respond to nuclear and radiation emergency situations.

Oleh Korikov expressed his gratitude to DOE/NNSA for assistance and support and emphasized their importance for ensuring nuclear security and the ability to respond amidst Russia's long-term military aggression against Ukraine.

During the meeting, the interlocutors noted the importance of cooperation and data exchange on any changes in the radiation environment for the purposes of operational assessment of the situation, informing the authorities and society, refuting fake reports about the security status, and optimizing the use of radiation measurement equipment donated by donors as humanitarian aid assistance, in accordance with the needs of today and the requirements of the law.

Mr. Daniel Blumenatal informed the SNRIU about plans and measures taken by DOE/NNSA to aggregate various data and expand the possibilities of their rapid use at all levels of management during the response to a nuclear or radiation emergency using a new, independent version of the CBRNResponder Network, the US national radiological data management tool, adapted for use by Ukraine. CBRNResponder has a growing circle of data providers and consumers, an innovative technology designed to accelerate the response to radiological emergencies in today's world of high-speed transmission and dissemination of information.

As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached on the continuation of cooperation between DOE/NNSA and the SNRIU within the framework of the work of the Ukraine support group and the programs implemented by DOE/NNSA, in particular, maintenance of equipment and systems of independent radiation monitoring, training, and exercises for specialists of the regulator as well as other Ukrainian organizations involved in ensuring nuclear safety and emergency response.
