As part of the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors in Vienna on 6 June 2024, Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko and members of the Ukrainian delegation, including Head of SNRIU - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh Korikov, met with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, the press service of the Ministry of Energy reports.

Herman Galushchenko informed the IAEA Director General about the situation in the Ukrainian energy system, which has become significantly more complicated after russia resumed massive attacks on energy infrastructure facilities. The Minister stressed that russia is targeting thermal and hydroelectric power plants, transformer substations and power lines. He also noted that scheduled repairs are currently underway at Ukrainian nuclear power plants to ensure that all available nuclear generation capacities are put into operation in winter.

Herman Galushchenko reminded that in November 2022, during the russian attacks, Ukrainian NPPs were blacked out. In this context, the parties discussed the need to coordinate efforts to prevent such a situation from happening again.

Particular attention was paid to the situation at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Ukrainian ZNPP, which is occupied by russia. In particular, they discussed the technical condition of the power units, the lack of qualified personnel at the plant, the militarisation of the NPP industrial site, the mining of the perimeter of the facility by the occupiers, and the instability of external power supply due to constant russian shelling.
