On March 20, 2023, the Acting SNRIU Chairman, Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh Korikov and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi was held a working meeting within the scope of the Joint Eighth and Ninth Review Meeting on the Implementation of Obligations under the Convention on Nuclear Safety.
During the meeting, Oleh Korikov and Rafael Grossi discussed the current situation at Zaporizhzhia NPP. The IAEA Director General stressed the importance of the Agency's permanent monitoring mission at ZNPP to ensure constant communication between the plant, the regulator and the IAEA, as well as at other Ukrainian NPPs to record the impact of the war on nuclear and radiation safety, provide technical advice, study priority needs at nuclear facilities for further technical assistance.
Oleh Korikov congratulated Rafael Grossi on his re-election as IAEA Director General and, highly appreciating his initiative to create a zone of unconditional security and nuclear safety around ZNPP and once again highlighted that the only stable and safe condition of ZNPP, which ensures nuclear and radiation safety, is possible only under the condition of demilitarization, de-occupation of the plant and its return under full control of the Ukrainian authorities.
The acting Chairman of the SNRIU mentioned that russia's criminal actions against Ukrainian nuclear facilities should be appropriately recorded in the final documents of the Joint Eighth and Ninth Review Meetings on the fulfillment of obligations under the Convention on Nuclear Safety. He also emphasized that the international nuclear community should take decisive and rigorous measures against the aggressor country that committed nuclear terror.
