Ukraine proposed the International Atomic Energy Agency to arrange the permanent monitoring missions at operating Ukrainian nuclear power plants, including Chornobyl NPP, which is currently under decommissioning. Acting SNRIU Chairman, Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh Korikov announced the following during the briefing at the Media Center “Ukraine – Ukrinform” on 10 January 2023.
“The main purpose of these missions is to monitor the state of nuclear and radiation safety at nuclear facilities in the war conditions. Constant presence of IAEA representatives at Ukrainian NPPs, will be a possibility to observe the situation in real time. In particular, the impact on the safety of nuclear facilities - of the targeted missile attacks of russian troops on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. Let me remind that on November 23, as a result of the missile attack, all power units of Ukrainian NPPs were shut down, because the emergency protection was engaged”, - Oleh Korikov said.
He noticed that IAEA agreed with the proposal of the Ukrainian side and in the nearest future permanent monitoring missions of the Agency will be conducted at all Ukrainian NPPS.
