An online meeting on the second phase of the IAEA Mission to Ukraine to support and assist in the safety and security of radiation sources

On 07 August 2024, an online meeting was held at the invitation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to discuss the second phase of the IAEA Mission on Safety and Security of Radiation Sources (ISAMRAD) in Ukraine. The meeting was attended by representatives of the SNRIU, SSTC NRS, and involved enterprises: National Scientific Centre "Institute of Metrology"; National Cancer Institute; and State Enterprise "USIE IZOTOP"; SSE ASSOCIATION RADON, whose activities are related to the use of radiation sources and management of radioactive waste in the form of spent radiation sources, which have already received and continue to receive international logistical support and assistance under the said Mission, the first stage of which was launched a year ago, namely, the activities of the IAEA ISAMRAD Mission in Ukraine from 23 July to 1 August 2023.

During the online meeting, the participants discussed the current state of safety and security of radiation sources at enterprise facilities, the state of overcoming challenges arising from military impacts and risks, the state of receiving and using international logistical assistance within the first stage of the IAEA ISAMRAD Mission.

As a result of the online meeting, the next stages of the IAEA ISAMRAD Mission were identified, and the urgent needs of enterprises were updated. The IAEA representatives proposed to extend and expand the mission to overcome difficulties related to the impact of the war and to maintain the level of radiation safety and security in the use and management of radiation sources.
