On May 15, 2023, Acting SNRIU Chairman, Chief State Nuclear and Radiation Safety Inspector of Ukraine Oleh KORIKOV had a meeting with Director of the U.S. Department of Energy, Energy Attaché of the U.S. Department of Energy Shawn ANDERSON.
During the meeting, the officials discussed the impact of russian military aggression on the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine. According to Oleh KORIKOV, the war initiated by russia directly affected the implementation of measures provided for in the Comprehensive (Consolidated) Safety Upgrade Program for Nuclear Power Plants. In particular, the military actions caused problems with the supply of necessary equipment and materials, damaged a number of industrial enterprises, and created logistical problems due to the destruction of infrastructure.
During the meeting, SNRIU Chairman has also informed the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Attaché on the process of transition of Ukrainian NPPs to nuclear fuel from a friendly supplier and on the situation with the spent nuclear fuel management.
Oleg KORIKOV introduced Shawn ANDERSON to the concept of inspections and restoration of the safety level of nuclear facilities at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site after its de-occupation, demilitarization and return to the control of the Ukrainian Government.
In addition, the sides discussed the prospects for the construction of small modular reactors and new power units of the AP1000 project in Ukraine, which may become one of the key factors in the development of nuclear energy in our country. In this context, the participants of the meeting emphasized on the importance of adapting the regulatory base (taking into account the US experience) to ensure safe operation of new types of nuclear facilities in Ukraine.
