According to the operating organization, Energoatom, on the night of August 10, the high-voltage external line of the 750 kV Dniprovska Power Line, which provided power to the Zaporizhzhia NPP occupied by the russian federation, was disconnected. Currently, power supply is provided by the backup 330 kV line Ferrosplavna-1, which, if disconnected, will result in a complete loss of external power supply to Zaporizhzhia NPP.
The absence of reliable power supply to ZNPP from the Ukrainian electricity supply grid is a clear violation of one of the seven integral components of nuclear safety and security that IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi outlined at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting on March 2, 2022, and which defines the need to "ensure that all nuclear facilities have reliable external power supply from the electricity grid".
This is also a violation of one of the five principles stated by Rafael Grossi at a meeting of the UN Security Council on May 30, 2023, to ensure nuclear safety and security at ZNPP and prevent a nuclear accident. This principle states that "the power supply to ZNPP should not be threatened, and to this end, every effort should be made to ensure the continued availability and security of external power supply".
Restoring the safe operation of Zaporizhzhia NPP is possible only after de-occupation, demilitarization of the plant and its return under the full control of the competent operating organization - SE NNEGC Energoatom - and the competent regulatory authority - SNRIU.
