The russian occupants do not allow the Ukrainian personnel of Zaporizhzhia NPP to transfer power unit No. 5 to the "cold shutdown" state, as provided for by the SNRIU order of June 8, 2023. This was discussed during the weekly meeting on communication between the IAEA Crisis Center (IEC) and the SNRIU on the activities of the IAEA mission at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site, which was held on June 13, 2023.
According to Oleh Korikov, Acting Chairman of SNRIU, Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine, the illegal actions of the fake operating organization and russian military occupants that prevent the transfer of ZNPP Unit 5 to the cold shutdown state are a severe violation of the legislation on nuclear energy use.
"I hope that during his next visit to Zaporizhzhia NPP, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi will be able to influence the russian occupiers and convince them of the necessity to put Unit 5 into cold shutdown. Obstacles from the russian invaders are nothing more than another nuclear threat. And this is happening after they blew up Kakhovka HPP, which actually led to the disappearance of the Kakhovka reservoir and escalation of the issue of water supply to ZNPP", Oleh Korikov noted.
IAEA experts are also interested in and emphasize the importance of access to Zaporizhzhia NPP, as well as its drainage canal, and the ZNPP cooling pond, in order to better assess the situation with the nuclear power plant's water reserves.
