Radiation Monitoring Following Fire in Exclusion Zone
Published 02 July 2015 09:51

Radiation levels in the exclusion zone are continuously monitored by the Ecocentre automated radiation monitoring system (ARMS) at 39 control points. The data are provided to the control center every hour in routine operation and every two minutes in case of an emergency.

Information on radiation situation in the fire-affected area can be seen in real-time mode at http://srp.ecocentre.mns.gov.ua/MEDO-PS/index.php?lang=ENG.

Staff of the Chernobyl Specialized Enterprise conducts survey on the fire-affected territory. On 30 June 2015, the Ecocentre mobile operational group conducted radiological survey on the following route: KorogodDibrovaKovshilivkaPolis’keLubyankaStara Krasnitsa. No significant increase in the gamma exposure dose rate or beta-particle flux density has been found. However, an air sample taken in the fire area near the evacuated urban village of Polis’ke contained 2.5×10-3 Bq/m3 of 137Cs, which is one order of magnitude higher than the reference level established in the health and safety standard “Basic Reference Levels, Exemption Levels and Action Levels for Radioactive Contamination of Objects in the Exclusion and Resettlement Zone” for the former populated centers, where specific categories of personnel are staying.

According to ARMS, average values of equivalent dose rate (EDR, nSv/h) in the fire area as of 1 July 2015, 08:00 AM, are as follows:

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the fire started on 29 June 2015 in the southwest part of the exclusion zone. As of 30 June 2015, six fire sites of different types were found. The distance from the fire sites to the town of Chernobyl is 20 km, to ChNPP is 23 km, to the Buryakivka radwaste disposal site and Vektor site is 10 km and to the southern boundary of the exclusion zone is 5-10 km.

On-line information on fire extinguishing is updated by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and can be found at http://www.mns.gov.ua/news/40286.html.

Exposure dose rates in air and on soil measured by the Central Geophysical Observatory at Chernobyl weather station and points in Kiev are available at http://www.cgo.kiev.ua/

Thus, the data from the existing monitoring systems for radiation situation in the exclusion zone and adjacent areas indicate that the basic changes in the radiation situation parameters, except for seats of fire, do not exceed the control levels for certain territories. Radiation in Kiev is in the range of background radiation level.
