Ukraine fulfills recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on enhancing the control in the area of nuclear safety”. Stated Chairperson of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine Ms. Olena Mykolaichuk while commenting draft Law “On National Commission that performs state regulation of safety in the area of nuclear energy use”, which passed first hearings at Verhonva Rada of Ukraine on 18th of October 2011.

«Strengthening of powers and independence of national authorities on regulation of nuclear and radiation safety is one of the priorities of the Action Plan approved by consensus during IAEA General Conference session that took place on 19-23 of September 2011 in Vienna”, - she said.

The Chairperson of SNRIU underlined that this draft Law corresponds to the obligations of Ukraine in connection with implementation of signed international treaties (Convention on Nuclear Safety, Joint Convention, and Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material). «These norms correspond to the requirements of the IAEA, to which Ukraine is a member» - she said.

According to Ms. Mykolaichuk the experience of functioning of nuclear regulatory authorities of leading countries was taken into account in the process of development of this document.

The Chairperson of SNRIU also stated that the important requirement of this document is that the national commission is obliged to inform public about the safety level of nuclear facilities and objects for radioactive waste management, including measures taken to enhance safety and fundamental arguments for decision-making on social important issues.
