On February 7, 2024, as part of bilateral cooperation between the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the State Nuclear Safety Inspectorate of Lithuania (VATESI), an online seminar was held on the safety regulation of the decommissioning of RBMK reactors - Chornobyl NPP and Ignalina NPP.
Representatives of SNRIU and VATESI exchanged experience in terms of regulatory requirements for decommissioning nuclear installations, issuing licenses and other permits for carrying out decommissioning activities, handling radioactive waste, conducting state supervision of compliance with nuclear safety and security requirements, etc.
SNRIU also informed VATESI about the experience of regulating the safety of facilities and activities in the Chornobyl exclusion zone after its occupation by russian troops.
Opening the seminar, Oleh Korikov, Head of SNRIU - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine, noted, that despite the full-scale invasion of the russian federation, SNRIU continues to perform its functions in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine under martial law, international law and the provisions of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Conventions, and also thanked for the international support, which is so necessary for SNRIU to perform its functions in war.
