Information about the situation in Exclusion Zone
Published 06 June 2018 16:23

According to the information provided by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine at the exclusion and mandatory resettlement zone the 5th of June at 10:10 a.m. has been noticed a dry sunburn with its further spread of fire at the forest area, that has been extended up to 10 hectares.

As of 10:00 a.m. of the 6th of June at the exclusion and mandatory resettlement zone the measures aimed at putting out the separate fireplaces were being continually taken at approximately the area of 5 hectares.

The situation was taken under control. There is not any open fire noticed for now and there can be observed only the smolder of three fireplaces of forest dry grass litter, dead grass and fallen trees and stumps.

35 items of equipment and 150 people were engaged in putting out the fire among which there were 22 units of SES in the number of 130 people.

The information is updated on the website of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine http://www.dsns.gov.ua/ua/Nadzvichayni-podiyi/78347.html (in Ukrainian language).

The fireplace was located near the construction site of the spent fuel storage facility (ISF-2), the fire was extinguished, the personnel were not threatened.

As of 08:00 a.m. the 6th of June 2018 all abovementioned data according to the information provided by SSE Chernobyl NPP has not been changed.

According to the information provided by the State agency of Ukraine for the management of the exclusion zone at the area of the exclusion and mandatory resettlement zone has been set a reinforced control of the radiological situation. The data of equivalent radiation gamma rays dose and the level of radionuclides in the air has been processing.

The power of equivalent radiation gamma rays dose according to the automated radiation monitoring system (ARMS) at the area of dry sunburn has not been significantly changed, current values fluctuation do not fall beyond normal indexes (table 1).

Control levels of equivalent dose are not exceeded.

During the fire SSE “Ecocenter” mobile group and its aspirating and radiation detection equipment has been engaged in the firefight.

According to the radiation intelligence data, the equivalent dose rate near the fire line in the district of Korogdog Forest, 16th quarter at a distance of 1 m from the soil surface was 0.7x10-6 Sv/h, the value of the beta-particles flux density was 140 ppm (min x cm2).

The volumetric activity of 137Cs in the air at the fireplace is given in Table 2.

The excess of the control level (hereinafter referred to as CL) for 90Sr was noticed in 1,5 times, and in 137Cs - CL was not exceeded. CL has established hygiene standards "Basic control levels, levels of release and levels of action in relation to radioactive contamination of the objects of the exclusion zone and the zone of mandatory resettlement".

In other areas of the exclusion zone, CL is not exceeded.

Thus, there was only a local increase in volumetric activity or excess of CL of radionuclides in the surface layer of air in the vicinity of the fire.

Reference: The radiation background in the exclusion zone is monitored by the automated radiation monitoring system (ARMS) in a continuous mode at 39 points. The data comes to the control center once per hour, in an emergency – once in 2 minutes. Radioecological data for the city of Kyiv (dose rate) are presented on the map of the European real-time exchange of radiology data platform - EURERDP https://remap.jrc.ec.europa.eu/GammaDoseRates.aspx.

The radiation situation is under control, further information will be promptly clarified and provided. Specialists of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, using the mobile laboratory RanidSonni, conducted radiation research in Kyiv. According to the results of intelligence:

Radionuclides of technogenic origin Сs-137, Am-241 in air in Kyiv were not detected;

the radiation background in Kyiv has not changed (from 0.1 to 0.15 x10-6 Sv/h, which is within the normal range).
