On 17 September 2024, on the sidelines of the 68th IAEA General Conference in Vienna (Austria), the SNRIU Chairman, Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh Korikov and President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) Pierre Tremblay held a working meeting, during which the parties discussed the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation and Information Exchange on Nuclear Regulation signed in August 2023 in Kyiv.
During the meeting, the SNRIU and CNSC leaders outlined the prospects for cooperation for the coming year, with the priority being the issue of regulatory activities for the decommissioning of uranium mining and processing facilities.
"We are interested in learning from Canada's experience in maintaining and improving the safety of uranium ore mining and processing activities, as well as at the stage of decommissioning of uranium mining and processing enterprises. We are also interested in your experience in the context of adapting Ukrainian legislation to the European one", said Oleh Korikov.
In addition, he assured of the readiness of the Ukrainian nuclear regulator to share its experience and information on accident mitigation and radioactive waste management, which Ukraine gained in the process of overcoming the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster.
Since Canada is one of the world's leading countries working on the introduction of new technologies in nuclear energy, the parties also raised the issue of pre-licensing safety assessment of new nuclear facility designs (small modular reactors).
During the meeting, the SNRIU Chairman informed in detail about the state of nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine and stressed the inadmissibility of criminal attacks of the russian federation on energy infrastructure facilities that have a significant impact on the safety and stability of Ukrainian NPPs.
