Extension of service life-time of Unit 2 of South-Ukraine NPP

With the purpose of encouraging public participation in discussion of decisions that may affect the environment, giving the opportunity of easy access to information about activity of the state executive authorities, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine starts public consultations on issue related to possible lifetime extension of nuclear facility – Unit 2 of the South-Ukraine NPP from 28 October to 30 November, 2015.

In pursuance of requirements of the Law of Ukraine “On Permissive Activities in the Field of Nuclear Energy Use operating organization NNEGC “Energoatom” submitted for review by SNRIU “Application on introducing amendments into License ЕО No.000064 to perform activity at the stage of the life-cycle “operation of nuclear facilities of the South-Ukraine NPP” in order to ensure long-term operation of Unit 2 of the SUNPP at energy power levels after having undergone a project period.

Periodic Safety Review (PSR) for Unit 2 of the South-Ukraine NPP, which according to legislation in force is an obligatory annex to Application, contains information where operating organization substantiates safe long-term operation of power unit until 31 December, 2025 (materials on comprehensive safety analysis can be found here).

SNRIU has completed state expertise on nuclear and radiation safety of PSR materials for Unit 2 of the South-Ukraine NPP (conclusions of state expertise can be found here).

With the purpose of verifying completeness and accuracy of data provided by NNEG “Energoatom” in corresponding documents, determining an applicant’s ability to follow conditions of the announced type of activity in accordance with established norms and rules on nuclear and radioactive safety, a comprehensive inspection was carried out at the site of SUNPP on 19-23 October, 2015. According to the information provided by NNEGEnergoatom, a letter dated 21.10.2015 No.72.16542 containing investigation of SUNPP impact on environment was sent to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Recourses of Ukraine.
