On January 21, 2022, Acting Chairman - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh KORIKOV met with Balthazar LINDAUER - Director of the Nuclear Safety Department of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in a videoconference format to discuss safety issues in cooperation between the Ukraine and the EU.
During the meeting, B. Lindauer informed about at the projects in the field of nuclear security implemented in Ukraine under the Nuclear Security Account and the Chornobyl Shelter Fund. Also he remined about the creation of a new International Cooperation Account on Chornobyl with the support of the Government of Ukraine, noting that nuclear and radiation safety issues are relevant at the ChNPP site and in the Exclusion Zone.
"There’s important role of EBRD in supporting of the Ukraine's nuclear power plants modernization, but the continuation of funding depends on the implementation of Ukraine's guarantee obligations," Lindauer said. He also underlined that for the EBRD and donor countries the issue of nuclear and radiation safety is an absolute priority, and the independence of the nuclear and radiation safety regulator of Ukraine is the key to successful implementation of existing and promising projects implemented by the EBRD.
Acting Chairman - Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of Ukraine Oleh KORIKOV thanked European partners for comprehensive information on the status of existing projects supported by the EBRD and for unchanged position on the priority of ensuring nuclear and radiation safety requirements for current legislation of Ukraine and international security standards: "We appreciate it and are open to dialogue and further cooperation."
