In the premises of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, a working meeting was held between the Acting SNRIU Chairman Oleh Korikov and the Energy Attaché at the U.S. Department of Energy in Kyiv Shawn Anderson. During the meeting, the parties discussed cooperation plans for 2024.
“First of all, I want to thank the United States, the State Department of Energy, for helping to maintain the stability of the energy sector of Ukraine and the SNRIU in particular. We are grateful for the assistance that came through various channels: on a bilateral basis, in the framework of cooperation with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC), the US Department of Energy, as well as through the IAEA RANET mechanism”, said Oleh Korikov, adding that the assistance from the United States made it possible to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian nuclear regulator to ensure the state system for regulating nuclear and radiation safety in conditions of war.
Among the priority areas of cooperation for 2024, the parties discussed:
providing technical assistance to Ukrainian enterprises that were under occupation and whose activities are related to the management of radioactive waste (RAW), ionizing radiation sources (IRS); spent nuclear fuel (SNF);
improvement of the physical protection system during SNF and RAW transportation;
work on improving radiation monitoring systems and data transmission systems.
In addition, Oleh Korikov and Shawn Anderson discussed issues related to the prospect of introducing small modular reactors in Ukraine and licensing nuclear fuel. In this context, the head of the Ukrainian nuclear regulator stressed the importance of studying the experience of advanced countries in the field of nuclear energy and amending Ukrainian legislation.
